Looking Back: Sheppard’s Dominance in the 2023 Speed Showcase Makeup Event
The Speed Showcase event has provided some unforgettable moments, and last year’s makeup race was no exception. Matt Sheppard charged from ninth place to claim a thrilling $50,000 victory, mastering a challenging track surface that kept teams on their toes throughout the weekend.
Friday’s qualifying night saw drivers facing a surface with plenty of character, testing their ability to adapt to different lines. By Saturday, the daylight start led to concerns over tire wear, which ultimately played a pivotal role in the 75-lap main event.
Before the feature, the track crew performed a full rework of the surface, presenting drivers with a fresh challenge. However, tire conservation became a major factor, with several competitors making unscheduled stops on the front stretch for tire changes.
Sheppard, despite choosing a softer tire compound, credited his ability to get out front early as the key to managing his tires and securing the victory.
"I think the key was that restart and getting out front," Sheppard said in victory lane. "Once I got out front, I could really go into conserve mode and conserve enough to get me to the end. If I didn’t get that good restart and get out front, I probably would’ve been in trouble."
Runner-up Billy Decker provided an exciting charge from 24th place, nearly challenging Sheppard in the closing laps.
"I didn’t like our chances the other night when the track was super-sonic, but when the track slowed down, I liked our chances," Decker said.
With another Speed Showcase weekend on the horizon, the competition is sure to be fierce once again. Will we see another thrilling charge to victory lane? Be there at Port Royal Speedway to find out!
